Hatch Finatic Reels

Hatch 3 PlusShortly after Hatch Outdoors redesigned their reels into the current incarnation (The Finatic) I was in the market for a lightweight reel to pair with a little Scott F2 rod I own. Luckily Hatch had also engineered a tiny reel utilizing the same drag system (scaled down) they employ on their larger game reels, and these reels have an excellent reputation among those in need of a reel capable of stopping huge fish and handling line weights far heavier than anything I have ever dreamed of using.  So I looked into them, and quickly became a huge fan of the Finatic reels, ultimately purchasing their 1 Plus to pair with my little Scott.

This was quite a departure for me, as I tend to favor the aesthetic (and function) of much more traditional offerings.  But these reels are simply outstanding, and they look every bit as good as they function.

So when I began identifying products that I really wanted to give away as part of the public launch of this site, the Hatch Finatic reels were part of the select few.  Luckily for me, the individuals at Hatch Outdoors are just as cool as their products, and I now have a Hatch 3 Plus Finatic to give away, as well as the coolest Fishtail Bottle Openers you’ll ever see.

Now for those of you unfamiliar with the Hatch reels, I’ll give you a quick pictorial tour here, and provide you with my perceptions and experience using these reels along the way.

Hatch Box

The packaging.

Hatch Box Open

Cool neoprene reel cases! Inside the box is also an allen wrench for releasing the sealed disc drag, a Hatch sticker, and a company product brochure. The simple Owner’s Manual is actually printed right on the box top flap (partially seen here).

The “reel” goodies!

Hatch Spool:Frame 2

A few turns of the capture nut on the spool allows for easy spool removal, and the nut remains with the spool, so you can’t lose it. (Each spool has its own nut.)

The sealed drag (left) has a male "flower" that mates to the corresponding female flower of the spool. On all models except the 1 Plus Finatic, you can get reels or extra spools with a mid or large arbor and both will work on the same reel frame! (The 1 Plus only has mid-arbor spools available.) Additionally, by flipping the cartridge of the sealed disc drag, you can change the reel from Left Hand Retrieve (as shipped) to Right Hand Retrieve.

Capacity for these reels is (in my opinion) understated. Since this is the Giveaway reel I didn't spool it up to see how much it would hold. But as a 3 Plus it will certainly hold more than my little 1 Plus. So for reference, know that i can get a full 5 weight Wulff TT and at least 90 yards of 20# Micron backing on the little 1 Plus.

The horizontal slot in the line guard serves as an ingenious hook-keeper, keeping fingers safe, and hooks out of the way.  Capacity for these reels is (in my opinion) understated by Hatch. Since this is the Giveaway reel, I didn’t spool it up to see just how much it would truly hold. But as a 3 Plus it will certainly hold more than my little 1 Plus. Now there may be some of you out there thinking that this is way more reel than you will ever need for the dry fly fishing that you do, especially the incredibly smooth and powerful drag.  But having had occasion when the unexpected occurs, I can tell you from personal experience that it is awfully nice to have around “just in case”, and you’ll certainly never have to worry about putting a fish on the reel.

The Hatch Finatic reels are truly one of my favorite products, and one of the few I’d recommend to others without any reservations whatsoever.  That’s why one is being given away here, and to be honest, I wish I could win it myself.  But since I can’t, someone is going to be one lucky DFG!  If you want that to be you, you’d better get registered and posting, because it’s being given away in the drawings being held on September 30, 2013.
